New beginnings again for Eric Ottow at Cafe Vella Whitby Newsbrief story December 2013 pg 12. |

Eric Ottow is the new owner of the popular Cafe Vella in Plimmerton, and he is full of exciting ideas and plans for the cafe. Eric has a background in the hospitality industry. Of Dutch heritage, Eric was born in Lower Hutt, but spent the early years of his life in Holland. Returning to New Zealand at age 15, he began at the very bottom, dishwashing and learning his kitchen craft. He worked at a bakery for three years, and then did stints at Victoria Station, Kapiti; the Anchor Inn in Levin, and Cafe Riviera in Kapiti, before originally buying Cafe Vella in 2002. He sold the business in 2007, and worked in the food supply sector for several years before purchasing Cafe Vella this year. Eric is excited to be back in a business he knows. He has big plans for modernisation of the courtyard area, and he will be mixing the traditional Vella menu with some more adventurous dishes. Already his current menu offers a dish from south Peru, for example, with a chilled prawn and potato dish. Eric supports the current move towards fresh, and healthy foods. He has gluten free offerings on the menu currently, and is a great believer in buying fresh food from local suppliers. Eric is very much a local man, focussing on his family, as well as playing interclub tennis for Whitby, and is a former Western Suburbs football player. Now he has taken up the whistle and referees for Capital Football. Cafe Vella has the same friendly local image, and with a professional staff of three, everyone is very welcome at Cafe Vella.
